Skimboarding in the Philippines started in 2000. American tourist Tim Garret taught the first four skimboardists namely Dodot Primer, Lennart Encina, Byvan Maceda, and Darwin Maceda. Soon after, skimboarding has evolved from a recreational activity to a competitive sport.

On the third day of my 4-day Catanduanes Island vacation, we went to Mamangal Beach to enjoy skimboarding. My co-workers and I are trying this water sport for the first time so we were very excited.

Catanduanes is located east of the Bicol Peninsula and is the main island of Catanduanes province. Storms frequently pass by this island because of its location; hence, Catanduanes has also been called, “Land of the Howling Winds”.

Once in Virac, the sky is bright blue and the air smells fresh to the lungs. I am not use to inhaling clean air so I found it very refreshing.
